In the last week Jonas has been joining us as we pray over our meal. He used to just gesture for the food and had no interest in holding our hands or anything. Now he reaches for our hands and sits quietly. If Ben and I aren’t holding hands, Jonas draws our hands together. A couple times, after the prayer, he’s said, “Jesus.” It’s so sweet.

I just took this. 5 pm, Friday afternoon. Totally zonked out from a day of fun at Grandma and Grandpa Osborne’s house.

Last weekend, Daddy and Jonas went to the store and bought an Elmo potty seat.
It wasn’t the best week for starting any kind of potty learning, as Jonas came down with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease and was not feeling well. He sat on it a half dozen times or so throughout the week – only when he wanted to.
Today, he actually pottied in the toilet. Yeah! He looked so surprised at first, and we were clapping and cheering as he went. Fifteen minutes later, he wanted to sit on the seat again. He didn’t do anything that time though.
I’m not pushing the potty training. We’ll just take it as it comes, and see how he does. He’s not even 21 months, so I’m not in a hurry. He began occasionally grabbing his diaper a couple weeks ago, and shortly after that, he’d often poop, so I thought maybe he was ready.

Recently, Jonas and I were playing with his wooden alphabet blocks. On each side, they have pictures of things that start with the letter. We were talking about the frog, and I said “frogs say ribbit, ribbit,” as I jumped like a frog. This week, he’s been bringing me the block saying “ibbIT, ibbIT!,” pulling on my arm to get down on my hands and feet to bounce for him. It’s so cute. Each time he sees a frog in a book now, he exclaims, “ibbIT!” He also says “frog” if I ask him what it is, but prefers to identify them by their sound.

I bought Jonas some crayons this week – those big, chunky crayons for little kids. He sits on the floor with the pad of paper for quite a while, but eventually he starts eating or throwing them, and then they need to be put away.
The First "Jonas Friday" February 22, 2008
My friend Erin keeps a calendar and at the end of each week, she jots down one thing her kids did that she wants to remember. I think that is such a great idea. So, I’ve decided to do the same with my blog. Each Friday I’ll record a little Jonas tidbit.
I’m having trouble coming up with a catchy title, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
For now, I’ll just call it JONAS FRIDAY. Creative, I know.
So, our little guy has been gaining communication skills at an incredible speed these days. He’s saying new words every day, but the thing that is so sweet is the way he has started taking us by the hand to show us what he wants. Today, he was asking for Elmo (his biggest obsession of the last few months), and I said, “No Elmo right now,” and he took my hand, led me over to the entertainment center, and put my hand on the doorknob. “Elmo? Elmo?”
We put some music on and danced instead.
