Diaper Bag: Done May 21, 2009

P5210003I must say, this is the most clever bag pattern. It is Anna Maria Horner’s Multi-Tasker Tote. Cutting the fabric, I had a difficult time visualizing how the pieces would fit together, and it was really a pleasure to watch it take shape. It is a bit more involved than the two other bag patterns I like: Sandi Henderson’s Market Bag and Amy Butler’s Swing Bag, but it is well worth the time.

While not a diaper bag pattern, this is a large bag, and I can’t imagine how I would ever fill it up, were I not using it for my little ones. The interior has one pocket that I sewed down the middle to make into two compartments, perfect for my phone and keys. The exterior sides have four pockets – good size for sippy cups, snacks, and small toys and books.

And yes, I finally made something for myself from Anna Maria’s Sketchbook fabric that I love so much. If it looks familiar, I made a bag for a Christmas gift out of the same fabric.

I also made a matching changing pad that you can see peaking out in the second picture. It’s backed with terry cloth and there is a layer of fleece in the interior to give it a little padding.

Now if this baby would just decide it’s time to come out….today is the due date, but there’s nothing exciting to report here. And I thought this one was going to be early. So much for my intuition!

Here’s the gift for my cousin’s wife that I mentioned earlier this week. It’s the Market Bag by Sandi Henderson, and the fabric is from Anna Maria Horner’s Drawing Room line. The interior is a light pink twill. I really love this bag. It’s nice and roomy and has a fantastic pocket – two actually, but I only did the interior pocket because I didn’t want to take away from the interesting print.

I’m not going to post my sis and mom’s gifts until they receive them, but here’s the quilt top for my mother-in-law’s present. This is my first experience with quilting, though it’s something I’ve wanted to get into for quite a while. So far, I’ve just sewn the quilt top together, but I’m a little nervous about the actual quilting process. I love the freshness of these fabrics. They’re all from Heather Bailey’s Pop Garden line. I’lll let you know how it comes out!

I used Amy Butler’s Swing Bag pattern to make a new bag from some Ginger Blossom fabric a few weeks ago.

I must say, I love this bag. So roomy and easy to carry. When time permits, I want to make another and add an inch or two to the depth so it’s a little bigger for longer trips with Jonas. As is, I can easily fit all my stuff, a cloth diaper, a cup, snacks, and a couple small toys. Two diapers are pushing it, though.

I made a new mei tai for our trip to Door County (which I still need to post about). It’s a faux Ball Baby Overall with an added hood. The fabric is stretch cord from Robert Kaufman.  I wasn’t sure how comfortable it would be with stretchy fabric, so I extended the shoulder straps down through the body to form and interior X. It’s really comfy and this was the first time I’ve gotten to wear Jonas in a long time. He refuses unless we’re hiking these days. If he sees me coming with a carrier, he says “Nooo,” as he runs away.

I made myself a much needed pair of flannel pajama pants. It’s pretty sad when I realize that I sleep in thread bare pants that I bought around the time I graduated from college! A couple more pairs of these are on the horizon.

Hmmm….I can’t seem to find a pic at the moment. Oh well, they’re nothing too exciting.

On to better things….

These are bags I made for Ali (right) and Heather (left) before Christmas.

I made Ben’s mom an apron for Christmas and my mom a set of napkins and placemats. I don’t have pictures of those right now though.

I rarely get to sew for myself, so I finally made a little something:

It’s the Simple Bag project from Patchwork + Quilted Gifts and the fabric is from Joel Dewberry’s Aviary line.

I’ve been lugging a diaper bag around for the last 17 months. I thought it was high time for something smaller.
