Some of the mamas on The Babywearer who sew play a Secret Santa type game called DIY Carrier Fairy. Everyone makes a carrier for someone else in the game.

Here is the mei tai I made for my mama:

P2270003 P2270006 P2270005 P2270002

I wish I would have set the elephants about an inch higher. As you can see in the last picture, you can’t quite see the full applique when you’re wearing it. I always have to throw Jonas on my back quickly though, because he protests being worn nowadays, so if I took more time, I might have been able to get him seated a little deeper which would place the elephants a little higher on his back.

Overall, I’m pleased with it. There are a couple spots on the waistband on the striped side where the fabric got pushed along because of the thickness of the padding, but I was afraid to undo it and chance ripping into the fabric. Ah well. It’s not very noticeable.

I almost always have Jonas model the carriers before sending them out the door. This is always a quick up and down affair because, as I said, he doesn’t like being worn much anymore. Today though, once he was on, he was actually content back there for ten minutes, maybe more. Wow; a breakthrough?

I look forward to warmer weather when we can start hiking more often. He likes being worn on hikes. I miss carrying him.

Here are a couple new mei tai testers I finished up in the last week:

P2050002

P1290001 P1290003

Unlike the first round of testers, these have a padded waist. They’re also a couple inches taller.

Yes, I’m coming to terms with the fact that Jonas is growing up, and he really doesn’t want to be worn anymore. I miss it, but I also want to respect his desire for more independence. He’s a busy boy, and he doesn’t have time to be strapped to mom’s back these days. There are many children who continue to be worn frequently all through toddlerhood, but apparently, Jonas is not one of those children, and that’s okay with me, even though I do wish he wouldn’t run away when he sees me with a carrier!

So, this is the last carrier I am making for him. I wanted to experiment with a padded waist since I’ll be adding that feature to my tester mei tais. I figured this would be a good opportunity to make a snuggly warm winter carrier for our youth group’s winter camp this weekend.

The interior is a shaggy, soft rosettes minkee, and the exterior is the leftovers from the bag I made Ali for Christmas. It’s a Japanese import that I just adore. I would have like to use the same fabric on the hood as the body, but I didn’t have enough, so I went with the coordinating fabric. I also experimented with a slightly different body shape, and I have to say, it is absolutely perfect for us right now. I wish I had an excuse to make a couple more!

Here it is laid out:

I actually coaxed him in for a couple quick minutes this weekend to see how it fit. (Yeah, he’s getting a little tall for a front carry)!:

And while I’m at it, posting lots of crafty pics today, here are the other recent mei tais I’ve done.

These are more of my hooded design that I’m currently testing:

And this is a gift I made for an online friend who just had her first baby:

Okay, enough pictures for now!

More Post-Christmas Craftiness

I made a new mei tai for our trip to Door County (which I still need to post about). It’s a faux Ball Baby Overall with an added hood. The fabric is stretch cord from Robert Kaufman.  I wasn’t sure how comfortable it would be with stretchy fabric, so I extended the shoulder straps down through the body to form and interior X. It’s really comfy and this was the first time I’ve gotten to wear Jonas in a long time. He refuses unless we’re hiking these days. If he sees me coming with a carrier, he says “Nooo,” as he runs away.

I made myself a much needed pair of flannel pajama pants. It’s pretty sad when I realize that I sleep in thread bare pants that I bought around the time I graduated from college! A couple more pairs of these are on the horizon.

Hmmm….I can’t seem to find a pic at the moment. Oh well, they’re nothing too exciting.

On to better things….

These are bags I made for Ali (right) and Heather (left) before Christmas.

I made Ben’s mom an apron for Christmas and my mom a set of napkins and placemats. I don’t have pictures of those right now though.
